Testimony begins in homicide trial of 'Silly the Clown' in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE COUNTY, Wis. (WKOW) -- Opening statements began Tuesday in the trial of a man known as "Silly the Clown," who is charged with killing his 7-week-old daughter.

Prosecutors allege that Catherine Schroeder died from shaken baby syndrome in 1991. Her father, professional clown Ronald Schroeder, is accused of her murder.

According to our Milwaukee affiliate, a doctor from Children's Wisconsin who testified Tuesday recalled how the baby arrived at the hospital 33 years ago.

"She arrived in the emergency room without a pulse or breathing," Dr. Carl Weigel said. "It appeared that the reason for all of this was severe head trauma."

The state also said Schroeder was abusive to his daughter and three other women.

The trial is expected to last two weeks.
