MADISON (WKOW) -- The Madison Police Department says a single gunshot was fired inside West Towne Mall late Friday morning.
Officers were called to the main entrance of the mall, located off of Gammon Road, at 11:36 a.m.. according to an incident report posted by MPD spokesperson Stephanie Fryer.
Fryer says video shows two people were near a cell phone store when one of them pulled out a gun and fired toward another person across the hallway. Fryer says it's unclear if this person was hurt during this incident.
The involved individuals ran out of the mall and got inside a vehicle, according to Fryer.
Police did not find anyone at the mall who was hurt, and so far, no one suffering from a gunshot wound has shown up at a local hospital.
Fryer says the mall followed its safety protocols after the shot was fired. Employees shut down businesses and moved customers into safe areas of their stores. People who were inside the mall told 27 News some stores were locked down with patrons inside.
By around 1:30 Friday afternoon, many stores had reopened. Several businesses located outside but near the mall went on lockdown, but those stores have since reopened.
Fryer says Vel Phillips Memorial High School went on a secure and hold following this incident. A letter was sent home to families informing them about the shooting.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014 or online at p3tips.com.
