MADISON (WKOW) — A judge sentenced a Mazomanie man who police say left two young cats in a parking lot. One of them died.
Court records show Lucas Smith, 33, pleaded guilty in March to repeatedly, intentionally mistreating animals, a misdemeanor. As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors dismissed a felony bail jumping charge.
In court on Wednesday, a judge sentenced Smith to 10 days in jail, and he is required to pay court costs.
Police previously told 27 News, they saw Smith on business surveillance footage dropping off the two cats in November 2023 on Rethke Ave. near Commercial Ave. on Madison's east side. The video showed he hit one of the cats before he drove off.
Smith contacted police after he saw his own image in local news reports when police were looking for him. He was arrested during a traffic stop.
