OWI related homicide charges in Madison crash that left 1 dead

MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) — One person was killed after a multi-vehicle crash that happened in the westbound lanes of WIS 30 early Friday morning.

The crash was reported at 3:56 a.m.

Madison firefighters and paramedics arrived about five minutes later to find three vehicles involved in the crash and one person pinned inside of a vehicle, according to spokesperson Cynthia Schuster.

Additional Madison Fire Department resources were sent to the scene to assist with freeing the pinned person.

Paramedics began to assess the pinned person as Ladder 8 worked to cut the roof off the vehicle. After removing the roof, paramedics determined the person suffered injuries that were not survivable, Schuster reported.

A second patient was found on the scene. They were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The third driver involved in the crash reported no injuries.

All lanes of Stoughton Rd. were reopened to traffic as of 9:30 a.m.

The Madison Police Department is investigating the crash. Lt. Kimberly Alan said the preliminary investigation shows a vehicle driving north on Stoughton Road collided with two vehicles exiting WIS 30 onto Stoughton Road.

Alan reports one of the drivers may have run a red signal.

In an update posted Friday afternoon, spokesperson Stephanie Fryer said the driver who ran the red light is facing charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and recklessly endangering safety.
