2 dead in plane crash near Monroe Municipal Airport

MONROE, Wis. (WKOW) -- The Green County Sheriff's Office says two people were killed when a plane crashed in a gravel quarry near the Monroe Municipal Airport.

Crews were called to the scene on State Hwy 59 at 5:14 p.m. Monday in the Town of Sylvester.

A deputy arrived on scene and reported a large fire with construction equipment on fire in the quarry along with a large debris field from the aircraft.

Emergency personnel located two people deceased on scene. At this time their identities are unknown.

"Next steps for us are that our detectives are on scene working with the coroner's office to identify the two individuals," Green County Sheriff Cody Kanable said. "When we're able to do that, we will contact their family members. Beyond that, we will secure the scene for the NTSB and FAA to conduct their investigations."

Kanable added conditions were foggy at the time of the crash.

The NTSB and FAA are investigating the aircraft crash.
