High risk of wildfires prompts burn restrictions

The DNR has issued a high risk of wildfires in southern Wisconsin today. Columbia, Green Lake, Marquette, Juneau and Adams counties are under a "very high" risk. Warm temps combined with low humidity and breezy conditions are a recipe for wildfires to potentially start.

The National Weather Service encourages cautious use of hot equipment near dry, grassy areas and to extinguish cigarettes before discarding them.

Because of the high fire danger, the DNR has suspended all burn permits today. Therefore, burning in barrels, debris piles, grassy or wooded areas is prohibited. There are certain exceptions for people wanting to burn before 6 pm today, but those are examined on a case-by-case basis.

The DNR also discourages the use of campfires, but if you have to start one, use extreme caution.
