UPDATE (WKOW) -- Madison Police Chief Mike Koval says a 52-year-old man is dead after a stabbing in an apartment on West Badger Road.
The chief says officers were called to a four-unit building in the 1000 block of W. Badger Road around 5:30 a.m. Saturday, where they discovered a trail of fresh blood. They went into one of the apartments after dispatchers received a call from a person there who was out of breath. Chief Koval says officers found the furniture in disarray, blood in and around the scene and the victim, who appeared to have been killed as a result of stab wounds.
He says he's unsure how many times the victim was stabbed, but it was clearly more than three or four times. Koval says given the nature of the injuries, there was no chance officers could resuscitate him because he was already dead.
Around 7 a.m., a 27-year-old man was taken into custody. The chief says they feel strongly they have the person responsible for the homicide, but for now, he's being referred to as a person of interest. He has not yet been arrested or booked into jail, but is being held on other outstanding charges. Chief Koval says at some point, the man will be referred to the Dane County District Attorney's Office for a homicide charge.
Officers were able to find the person of interest within about an hour of the homicide because they received assistance from his family, according to the chief. Koval thanked them for providing "good counsel" to the man who's now in custody.
Koval says it appears the victim and the person of interest were roommates and had known each other for some time.
Investigators says there's no ongoing danger to the public because they believe the stabbing was not a random act of violence. Chief Koval adds that the case doesn't appear to be related to any of the other recent gun violence in Madison.
Officers have recovered "articles of interest," that may have been weapons, according to the chief. But he says they need to do more investigating before they can determine whether the articles were used in the homicide.
Koval says whether the victim's name will be released will be up to the discretion of the county medical medical examiner's discretion. That office would also release the official cause and manner of death.
The incident is Madison's fifth homicide of the year.
