Legislators to take comments on relaxing air pollution rules

Report Places Los Angeles At Top Of List For City With Worst Traffic And Smog

MADISON, Wis. (AP) _ A legislative committee is set to take comments from the public on a bill that would dramatically relax Wisconsin's air pollution rules.

The Republican measure would repeal any state air pollution rules that go beyond federal regulations. The state currently regulates hundreds more air pollutants than the federal government.

The bill would let state environmental officials create rules going beyond federal regulations going forward but those regulations would last only a decade.

The Assembly Committee on Federalism and Interstate Relations was set to hold a public hearing on the bill Tuesday morning.

The American Lung Association, Clean Wisconsin, the state Sierra Club chapter and the League of Conservation Voters have all registered against the proposal. The American Petroleum Institute, the Wisconsin Paper Council and Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce support it.
