SUN PRAIRIE (WKOW) -- Firefighters were called to an apartment fire early Thursday morning.
According to a release from the Sun Prairie Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 1:43 a.m. to the 600 block of Schiller Street for a report of a structure fire in a 12-unit apartment complex.
When crews arrived they encountered heavy smoke on the second floor of the building. Both fire and police units worked rapidly to evacuate the building. Due to the frigid temperature most residents were moved to a temporary shelter.
Once fire crews made their way to a second floor apartment unit, they found an open door with no one inside and food burning on a stove top. Firefighters put out the blaze and residents were able to return to their units after about an hour.
No residents or first responders were injured during the incident.
Crews credit a quick acting resident with pulling a fire pull station which assisted in the evacuation process.
