MILWAUKEE (WISN) -- A 23-year-old Milwaukee police officer died Thursday after being involved in a rollover crash.
Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales said Charles Irvine Jr. was killed in the accident as he and his partner were chasing a vehicle that was driving recklessly.
Their squad car flipped near 76th Street and Silver Spring Drive about 5 p.m.
After the accident, both officers were taken to Froedtert Hospital with serious injuries.
Irvine's partner has not been identified. He's 36 and in stable condition.
Officer Irvine had been with the department for about four years. He started when he was 19 and became a police officer at 21.
Milwaukee mayor Tom Barrett said the officers who serve with Irvine are suffering, the entire Milwaukee Police Department is suffering and the city of Milwaukee is suffering after Irvin's death.
"Officer Irvine gave his life for the people of this community," Barrett said. "He served this community because he wanted it to be a better community."
Barrett asked everyone to keep both officers and their families in their prayers.
