Officer given 'Top Cop' award for preventing school tragedy

APPLETON (WKOW) -- The state Department of Justice honored a Wisconsin school resource officer it says prevented a tragedy.

Jack Taschner of Appleton received the state's Top Cop award on Wednesday.

In April 2017, Taschner noticed two men inside Appleton East High School who were not students.

After investigating, he found out the men were sent to the school to attack a student, and the car that brought them there had loaded guns inside.

"In light of everything that's going on in the country it becomes an even more important role than just the average officer with Appleton having the amount of citizens we have," Taschner said Wednesday. "It's tough to feel accountable for all of them, but at the high school you feel accountable for all of them."

Taschner called the award a great honor.
