A Madison man was sentenced Friday to 21 years in federal prison for robbing a Stoughton bank in April. The man also admitted to robbing a Portage bank in September.
Jay’Von Flemming, 25, was sentenced to 14 years on the bank robbery charge plus a consecutive 7 years in federal prison for brandishing a gun during the robbery Oct. 17, 2017 of the Stoughton Home Savings Bank in Stoughton.
Flemming pleaded guilty to the charges on April 10, 2018. As part of the plea agreement, Flemming also admitted that he robbed the Bank Mutual in Portage on Sept. 27, 2017, and that firearms were brandished during that robbery.
Flemming was one of two men who entered the bank in Stoughton pointed guns at the bank tellers and demanded money. While in a vehicle after leaving the bank, they were spotted and pursued by a Dane County Sheriff’s deputy as they headed toward Madison.
During the pursuit on the Beltline in Madison, they attempted to elude police while driving at speeds over 100 miles per hour, and crashed the vehicle near Seminole Highway.
Both suspects were apprehended after a brief foot chase. The money taken in the Home Savings robbery and firearms were recovered from the abandoned vehicle.
On July 12, 2018, the second suspect, Kenny Furdge was also sentenced to 14 years on the bank robbery charge plus a consecutive 7 years in federal prison for brandishing a gun during the robbery of the Stoughton bank.
In sentencing Flemming, Judge Peterson expressed concern for the need to protect the public from Flemming’s long criminal history of violent and disruptive conduct beginning as when Flemming was a juvenile.
Peterson also considered the innocent victims seriously traumatized by the armed bank robberies and the high-speed chase as further dangerous behavior demonstrating the need to protect the public from Flemming’s conduct by incarcerating him for a significant period.
Judge Peterson also ordered Flemming to pay restitution for the money taken in the Portage robbery that was never recovered.
The charges against Flemming were the result of an investigation conducted by the Stoughton Police Department, Dane County Sheriff’s Department, Portage Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
