DeForest police chief to resign

The DeForest Village Board has reached a severance agreement with Police Chief Daniel Furseth.

As part of the agreement, Chief Furseth has resigned his post. He will be paid approximately $104,000 as part of the severance. The resignation will take effect Aug. 30, 2018. That's because according to state statute, the chief has seven days to change his mind. The agreement was signed Thursday.

The DeForest Police Commission says it will now begin the search for a new police chief. It will search for a consultant to help with hiring someone.

This all stems from a video posted on social media showing Chief Furseth mocking a group of African-American men.

The video was taken years ago but surfaced recently. The chief alerted the village board about the video, and members launched an investigation.
