Driver dead after car drives into river at Merrimac Ferry

UPDATE (WKOW) -- The driver of a car that went into the Wisconsin River at the Merrimac Ferry landing has died, but his passenger survived.

Merrimac fire chief Chris Jensen tells 27 News rescue crews were called to the landing around 9 p.m. Tuesday. Jensen says when crews got to the scene, they found a woman who was out of the water. She told authorities she was able to get out of the car and swim to shore, but a man was still inside the vehicle.

Jensen says they found the car about 30 feet off shore in about 12-15 feet of water. He says the Sauk County Dive Team found the body of the driver.

The driver is a man in his mid 50s, but his name has not yet been released.

Portions of Highway 113 at the ferry's north and south landings were closed due to the incident. Both sections were reopened around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.
