A Madison school teacher on administrative leave nearly a year after being accused of child sex assault has been paid more than $50,000 while off-the-job.
Terry Fay, 51, was arrested in October. In June, Dane County's district attorney announced Fay would not be criminally charged, unless additional evidence surfaced. Authorities say a boy claims Fay sexually assaulted him in a school classroom, bathroom and custodial closet during the 2011-2012 school year.
Madison School District officials say Fay has received $50,770 during his paid leave.
District spokesperson Rachel Strauch-Nelson says district officials waited for the police investigation to be completed before launching an internal investigation to determine whether any district policies have been violated or professional misconduct took place.
Strauch-Nelson says Fay's former fifth grade assignment at Leopold Elementary School has been filled by another teacher, who will remain in that position for the entire school year.
Strauch-Nelson offers no comment on any future assignment for Fay, if the outcome of the internal investigation allows him to return as a teacher.
