Suspect in Middleton Shooting Dead

An employee of a Middleton software company opened fire today on his coworkers, injuring four before he was shot by police. He later died at a Madison hospital.

The shooter, who has not yet been identified, used a semi-automatic handgun and had additional magazines, Middleton Police Chief Charles Foulke said in a news conference Wednesday afternoon. He described the gunman as being “heavily armed.”

He died later at UW Hospital, Foulkes said.

The shooter lived in Madison, and had not had any contact with police prior to this incident.

Three of the victims were seriously injured and were taken to UW Hospital for treatment.  As of 4 pm Wednesday, the condition of the three patients had not changed. Two patients were in serious condition and one was in critical condition.

A fourth victim was treated at St. Mary’s Hospital and released Wednesday afternoon, according to a spokesperson.

Foulke said about 10 Middleton police officers and Dane County Sheriff’s deputies responded initially, and two Middleton officers and two Dane County deputies engaged the shooter.

Police were called to the software company WTS Paradigm at 1850 Deming Way about 10:25 a.m. Sept. 19 for a shots-fired call.

Witnesses in a neighboring office building reported hearing shots, and when they looked out of their building saw blood on a stairway.

They quickly barricaded themselves in their office as police swarmed the area.

Shortly after, the Middleton Police Department sent a phone message to residents about an active shooter.

“There is an active shooter in the area please lock all doors, stay inside and shelter in place. Police officers are on scene at this time,” the recording said.

Middleton schools also were put on lockdown during the incident. The lockdowns were lifted by early afternoon.

Because of the lockdown, workers in the area couldn’t get to their cars, so they were taken away from the scene by bus where they could be picked up friends or family.

Businesses located near the shooting scene are expected to remain closed for the next 24-48 hours while investigators from the Department of Criminal Investigation, FBI and ATF continue their investigation into this incident.

Middleton police and the FBI have offered victim-witness counseling services to witnesses.
