10-year-old facing charges in infant death in Chippewa County

Chippewa County (WQOW) – News 18 is learning more about an incident that resulted in the death of an infant in Chippewa County.

Chippewa County Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk said on October 30, the sheriff’s department received a 911 call from a caretaker in the town of Wheaton. The caller said a 6-month-old male was bleeding from the head and was unresponsive. The 6-month-old was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital and later flown to a hospital in St. Paul. The child was dead when he arrived at the hospital in St. Paul.

The sheriff said later that night, the doctor called police and said he did not think the infant’s death was an accident. A 10-year-old was interviewed by police and confessed to harming the infant.

According to the sheriff, the residence in Wheaton is a licensed daycare.

The 10-year-old is going through adult court, and made an appearance on Monday morning. Kowalczyk said the child could be moved to juvenile court, but that has not been decided.

News 18 is withholding the name of the 10-year-old at this time.

The 10-year-old is being held on a $50,000 cash bond.
