MADISON (WKOW) — Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald is minimizing previous statements by Republicans about limiting how much power Gov.-elect Tony Evers should have.
Fitzgerald said he doesn’t have any set plans on what lawmakers will consider before Evers takes the oath of office in January, but clarified that Republicans are not trying to “undermine” his job.
One idea that was brought up by Fitzgerald was rules about Photo-ID laws when voting, especially if Evers wants to change current law.
“I think any review of the rule-making process is good to review at the beginning of any session,” said Fitzgerald. “I don’t think that’s got anything to do with Tony Evers, its more about what the caucuses feel about rule-making.”
On Wednesday, Speaker Robin Vos said it’s possible some mistakes were made in the past by giving Governor Walker “too much power.”
Evers had a warning for the GOP in a statement on Twitter stating, any attempts to weaken the powers of the governor’s office won’t be tolerated.

Fitzgerald said Speaker Vos’s statement about reducing power was not clear. He instead would like Evers new appointments to statewide boards to have equal representation, but did not clarify which ones.
“Evers will have the most powerful veto pen in the nation and the idea that he’s not going to be able to keep the legislature in check, you could be naive to think that,” said Fitzgerald.
The Republican leader did express concerns if Evers follows through on his campaign proposal to eliminate the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.
