The controversial Confederate monument has finally been removed from Forest Hill Cemetery and moved into storage at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum.
There are no plans at this point to put the monument on display, according to museum director Michael Telzrow.
Madison’s Common Council in October voted to reverse a decision by the city’s Landmarks Commission that kept a Confederate monument in Forest Hill Cemetery.
Stu Levitan, the commission chairperson, defended his panel’s previous decision to keep the marker in place. He says the commission was trying to adhere to standards put in place by the Secretary of the Interior.
“We did our job,” Levitan said. “I don’t know what legal basis you have for reversing the commission’s decision but I hope you can find one and order the monument’s removal.”
The common council voted 16-2 in favor of removing the marker.
