Complex wintry system impacts Southern Wisconsin today

THIS MORNING

Look for a potent round of precipitation to overspread Southern Wisconsin during the morning commute. Expect mainly rain SE of Madison, freezing rain/sleet for our central areas, including Dane County, and mainly snow for areas NW of Dane County.

THIS AFTERNOON & EVENING

As colder air filters in on the back side of this system, the snow will push southeast, so everyone should see some snow showers this afternoon before the system exits our area during or after the evening commute.

Another round of snow this weekend: full forecast

TOTALS

Up to 1/3″ of ice is possible for central sections, including Darlington, Mineral Point, Madison, Sun Prairie, Columbus, and Watertown.

1-3″ of snow can be expected immediately northwest of Madison, with 3-6″ possible to the far northwest (see graphic).

IMPACTS

All untreated surfaces will be slippery, especially since we already had a round of icing Tuesday night. Make sure to do the penguin shuffle so you stay upright!

Roadways will quickly deteriorate this morning.

The evening rush will also be slow as most of the region will still likely see snow at this point.

Take it easy and use safe driving techniques, like allowing extra time and extra space on the roads. Make sure to have your headlights on during the day Thursday, too, no matter what type of precipitation you’re seeing.
