Dog falls through ice, rescued by kayaker and first responders

MONONA (WKOW) — Monona police, firefighters and a kayaker teamed up to rescue a dog that had fallen the ice on the Yahara River.

The Monona Fire and Police Departments responded to a call of a dog falling through the ice on the 600 block of Pirate Island Road just after 10 a.m. Thursday, according to police.

“On arrival, they found a woman in a kayak was monitoring the dog’s situation, but was unable to reach the animal,” police said.

Firefighters threw a rope to the kayaker, and then pulled her up onto the ice near the dog. The woman grabbed the dog and pulled it to safety, police said.

The dog, according to police, was reunited with its owner.

“Thanks to a “Good Samaritan” willing to take a chance to help, this dog was rescued, but this could have ended up much more tragically,” Police Chief Scott Sulivan said.
