Firefighters knock down fire at Waunakee apartment building

WAUNAKEE (WKOW) — Seven people can’t stay in their apartments in Waunakee after a fire broke out in the building.

Crews were called to the building at 400 O’Malley Street around 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Waunakee fire chief Dave Kopp says firefighters saw heavy smoke coming from an apartment when they got there, so they immediately started evacuating the building.

“We got everybody out,” Kopp told 27 News. “One of the assistant chiefs pulled the alarm because there were no alarms sounding. Pulled the alarms and made sure everybody was out.”

One firefighter had a minor injury, but Kopp says he’ll be okay.
