MADISON (WKOW) — After shutting down one of its wells because of chemicals found inside, Madison Water Utility says it found small levels of those same chemicals in other wells.
The chemicals are called PFAS, short for per- and poly-fluoroalkyls. They are a widely-used class of chemicals found in non-stick cookware, water-resistant clothing, food packaging, stain-resistant upholstery and carpeting, and firefighting foams, according to Madison Water Utility.
The city originally found the chemicals in two wells — Well 15 on East Washington Avenue and Well 16 on Mineral Point Road. Well 15 was shut down in March.
New testing of 14 of the city’s 23 wells found PFAS in four more:
- Well 6 on University Ave.
- Well 9 on Spaanem Ave.
- Well 11 on Dempsey Rd.
- Well 14 on University Ave.
PFAS compounds were not found at the other wells that were tested.
The remaining wells will be tested in the coming months.
