City trying to expand entry limit for Madison bars

MADISON (WKOW) — The City of Madison and Madison police are working to expand restrictions for some downtown bars.

For the past year, some bars have not been allowedto let people in after 1:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. On Thursday night, the city’s Alcohol License Review Committee (ALRC) put those restrictions into the liquor licenses of some establishments.

Bill Rudy owns The Double U and Chasers Bar & Grille. He says even though he knows some bar owners don’t support the limits, he does.

“For me, if it hasn’t affected my business and it is safe, it’s a win-win,” Rudy told ALRC members Thursday.

Police say the entry limit was one way to combat bar-time violence in downtown Madison.

The Common Council still has to sign off on the license changes.
