Van stolen from field trip found and returned, with damage

PARDEEVILLE (WKOW) — A van containing an entire class’s sack lunches that was stolen during a field trip last week to the Henry Vilas Zoo is now back home.

“I’m exhausted, and I feel very violated,” said Blair Delagarza, who owns the van.

The van was missing for six days before officers knocked on her door in the middle of the night Sunday, finding it abandoned in Verona.

“We went right away, like about 3:00 in the morning to get it,” she said.

There was obvious damage to the outside, including a ding in the door and scrapes along the front.

Delagarza says that on the inside, they found that some of the kids’ lunches were eaten.

“You could see that they had eaten some of the food,” she said. “Wrappers were left, and part of a sandwich was left in the middle console.”

She said she also found a screwdriver inside, which she believes thieves used to pry open the door.

“We keep replaying that day we went to the zoo, like, ‘Did we lock the doors?’ And we’re pretty certain we did,” she said.

Even though the van is back, several questions remain.

“They haven’t arrested anybody yet,” Delagarza said. “There’s no leads on it either.”

That’s making Delagarza feel unsafe — so unsafe that she didn’t want to show her face on camera.
