Off-duty officer killed in Milwaukee crash

MILWAUKEE (WISN) — An off-duty Milwaukee police officer was killed in a crash early Tuesday morning.

It happened at N. 60th St. and W. Capitol Dr. about 1:35 a.m.

Police Chief Alfonso Morales identified the victim as Officer Kou Her.

Morales said Her was a 2-year veteran of the department.

Her was killed when a speeding driver ran a red light and hit Her’s car, Morales said.

Her was driving home after finishing his shift in District 4.

Morales did not identify the suspect who was driving, but said he was a 34-year-old Milwaukee man who has four OWI convictions.

Her was taken to Froedtert Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His body was taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine his cause of death.

The Wisconsin State Patrol will conduct the investigation into Her’s death.

The suspect was treated for his injuries.

Charges have not yet been filed in the case.

Morales said Her was married. He was survived by a large family of six brothers and two sister.

Morales said Her’s mother and father were both Vietnam War veterans.

He said they were proud to have their oldest son serve the city as a police officer.
