IOWA COUNTY (WKOW) — Criminal complaints have been filed in Iowa County Circuit Court charging Laurie D. Barry and Alexis E. Barry of Mineral Point, Wisconsin, with first-degree reckless homicide in the May 31, 2018, death of Selah Kaden, who was 13 years old at the time.
Selah is the daughter of David and Lisa Kaden, who reside in North Carolina, according to a news release.
As detailed in the criminal complaint, at the time of her death, Selah was staying with the Barrys by mutual agreement of the families while the Kadens addressed the medical needs of another one of their children.
No governmental or third-party entities were involved in this temporary caregiving arrangement, according to the release.
An initial court appearance is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, in the Iowa County Circuit Court located in Dodgeville, before Judge Margaret M. Koehler.
Given the circumstances of the tragic death of Selah, and based on the results of the extensive investigation in this matter, which included the gathering, cataloging, and testing of a substantial amount of evidence, law enforcement has no reason at this time to believe there is any risk to the public at large or to others in the Barry household, according to the news release.
The Barrys have retained Attorney Brian Brophy of Madison to represent them in this matter.
