Officials with Madison Gas & Electric say a mechanical issue is the likely culprit in a damaging utility sub station explosion and fire Friday that shot flames and smoke over one hundred feet into the air.
“After that initial explosion and while the fire was going, all our equipment was functioning properly,” MG&E Chief Executive Officer Jeff Keebler says. “That’s we had lights in the downtown area.”
The incident did cause a power outage in the downtown isthmus affecting more than 12,000 customers at its height, officials said.
