Police: Fitchburg homicide not random act

Fitchburg’s police chief said the person whose body was found Sunday evening on Lyman Lane was likely targeted.

“It does not appear this was a random act,” Chief Chad Brecklin said at a press conference Monday afternoon. Though he added police would make increased patrols and the public should remain aware of their surroundings.

Brecklin and Mayor Aaron Richardson used the conference as an opportunity to express their condolences to the murdered person’s family and ask the public for more information.

A family member has confirmed to 27 News that the victim in a Sunday evening homicide in Fitchburg was a student at Verona Area High School.

In a letter sent to parents Monday, Verona Area High School’s principal said a student died over the weekend.

Although when contacted by 27 News, district officials stopped short of connecting the student’s death to the homicide investigation currently underway by Fitchburg police.
