BARABOO (WKOW) — The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide reported over the weekend in the town of Fairfield.
Deputies responded to a call from the northeastern township and found a middle-aged man dead Sunday, the sheriff’s office said in a press release. An autopsy completed Monday called the death a homicide.
Sheriff Chip Meister identified the body’s location as a pull-off site along Levee Rd. near the Pine Island Wildlife area. The area is remote but it serves as a popular hunting and recreation site so he’s hoping someone may have picked something up in or around the woods.
“We ask that anyone with information on this or anyone living in the area near Levee rd if you have cameras or trail cameras to please contact the sheriff’s department,” he said.
As for the homicide, Meister said the investigation is still in its beginning stages so he said his department is unable to release much information, including his specific cause of death.
“We believe that this individual was targeted and we believe that there’s no danger to the public,” he said.
Authorities are withholding the name of the man killed until his family can be notified.
Anyone with information related to this case is asked to call Sauk County Crime Stoppers at 1-888-TIP-SAUK (847-7285).
The Wisconsin Department of Justice Crime Scene Mobile Response Unit, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Baraboo Police Department and Wisconsin Dells Police Department are assisting the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office.
