Madison mayor proposes $40 wheel tax

(Madison, WI) -- Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway has proposed an additional 40-dollar vehicle registration fee to help fund a Bus Rapid Transit plan. The public transit system would use dedicated traffic lanes and larger buses to reduce ride times. The so-called wheel tax is part of the mayor's first city operating budget plan, which totals 340-point-4 million dollars. It would also keep police staffing at its current levels. Former Police Chief Mike Koval, who retired this last weekend, said the move would mean 12 officers would have to return to regular patrol from units assigned to neighborhood policing and gangs.
