Authorities charged a former Jefferson County sheriff's deputy with felony burglary after an investigation by the state Department of Justice.
Janelle Gericke served with the department from February 2016 until she was fired on July 3 of this year, according to a press release from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
An investigation by the sheriff's office and DOJ's Division of Criminal Investigation found Gericke, while off-duty, tried to enter a house without the owner's consent.
"Jefferson County Sheriff Paul Milbrath and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office apologize to the people that they serve for the embarrassment and mistrust that this individual may have caused," the press release said.
