Pardon board rejects Brendan Dassey application

MADISON (WKOW) -- Gov. Tony Ever's Pardon Advisory Board rejected Brendan Dassey's application for clemency.

The refusal came in a letter dated Tuesday.

The pardon board said Dassey did not meet two criteria necessary to be eligible for consideration.

The governor requires all applicants to have completed their entire sentence and then wait an additional five years before they can be considered for a pardon. Dassey is serving a life sentence.

Additionally, Dassey is required to register as a sex offender, another reason the board would not accept his application.

A jury convicted Dassey of participating in the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach. The case and conviction became famous in the Netflix seriesMaking a Murderer.

Dassey's uncle, Steven Avery, is also serving life for the murder.
