Parent, child injured in Madison shooting

UPDATE (WKOW) -- A parent and child were injured in a shooting Wednesday morning in Madison.

The Madison Police Department says VCU detectives determined someone got out of a car near North Lawn Ave. and Dahle Street just before 7 a.m. and fired several rounds into another car, which was stopped at the intersection.

Police say a parent and two children were inside that car. The parent and one of the children were injured, but are expected to survive.

"So we're fortunate at this point that we're not looking at a homicide, or a double homicide or a triple homicide," Police spokesperson Joel DeSpain says. "As it stands, we're looking at an attempted first degree intentional homicide."

According to the Madison Metropolitan School District, the victims were on their way to school.

The shooting also was witnessed by some of the students.

DeSpain says the car the victims were in was targeted.

So as a precaution, Madison School District officials say the schools connected with the involved students were placed on a lockout status. Lockout means no person can enter or exit a building, but school activities continue.

"We wanted to make sure there weren't additional targets," School District spokesperson Timothy LeMonds says.

Four schools, Nuestro Mundo, Sennett, Madison East and La Follette, were affected.

The lockout ended when police determined there was no longer an outside threat to any of the schools.

This incident did not take place on any school property, and there was no direct threat made to any of the schools, according to the district.

Detectives are asking the community for help. If you saw anything or know anything, please contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers at (608) 266-6014.
