Wisconsin has joined 18 other states in filing a lawsuit against the federal government to prevent $3.8 billion from going to the southern border wall.
Gov. Tony Evers announced Wednesday he's allowed Attorney General Josh Kaul to get the state involved in the legal action via a press release.
President Donald Trump has long promised to construct a wall running the length of the border shared between the United States and Mexico.
"This diversion by the Trump Administration is a wasteful use of taxpayer dollars and neglects the needs of our state National Guard units," Evers said. "There is simply no justification for the president's continued desire to create a crisis at the border, and this move negatively impacts not only Wisconsin's economy, but the safety of our communities."
The press release from the governor's office said the $3.8 billion will come from the national Department of Defense's budget and could adversely impact Wisconsin manufacturers who produce military equipment.
The diverted funds could also impact National Guard units and construction projects planned in Wisconsin, the governor said.
Other states involved in the lawsuit include California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia.
