MADISON (WKOW) -- An 11-year-old girl says she was approached by a suspicious man on her way to Jefferson Middle School Thursday morning, according to Madison police.
Police say around 8 a.m. the girl was walking on Flower Lane toward Tree Lane and cut through a quiet parking lot. That's when she says a man yelled at her twice, trying to get her to come towards him. She then ran away and went home before walking to school on a more central route, according to police.
"Having a conversation with your children that walk to school about what to do if a stranger approaches them is always a good conversation to have," said police officials. "Children trusting their own instincts about what does not feel right can help [them] make the right decision, like this girl did, to flee a situation she knew was uncomfortable."
Police say their investigation is ongoing.
