Nonessential procedures postponement continues at Madison-area hospitals

Three Madison hospitals will continue to postpone nonessential procedures and surgeries to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

SSM Health, UW Health and UnityPoint Health - Meriter will delay those through at least April 24.

Hospital leaders are looking at the risk/benefit on social distancing and a potential surge in positive coronavirus patients.

"It also preserves personal protective equipment. As you can imagine for a lot of procedures, we're required to wear that gear, that takes it away from our frontline people who may need it to treat COVID patients," said Dr. Jeff Pothof, UW's Health's chief quality officer.

Pothof said impacted patients will be notified.
