JEFFERSON COUNTY (WKOW) -- Vandals damaged the Fort Atkinson sign on the outskirts of town over the weekend, inexplicably leaving three letters behind.
The sign is along Highway 26 on the south side of the city, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
"What was likely meant as a prank turned into a theft as the letters were stolen from the scene," the sheriff's office wrote in its Facebook page.
"If the wooden letters are returned to the scene so that the sign can be restored, it would not only be appreciated by those that will have to repair the sign, it would mean far fewer consequences for those involved," they wrote.
