Beltline reopens after being blocked by protesters

Protesters have blocked traffic on the westbound Beltline at the John Nolen Drive exit.

Demonstrators against police brutality in a caravan of cars drove onto the highway and began slowing traffic to a crawl. Authorities have told motorists to avoid the area.

According to the Madison Police Department, some of the protesters are on foot while others are in cars. Those on foot were denied access to the beltline and remained on John Nolan Drive.

The caravan of cars is continuing towards Middleton. Authorities have opened and closed lanes where appropriate. Police called it a "fluid" situation.

The demonstration began around 1 p.m. and the participants reached the beltline shortly before 2:30 p.m.
