Sun Prairie to honor fire captain killed in explosion

The City of Sun Prairie plans to unveil a memorial statue Friday, two years since a deadly explosion downtown.

Sun Prairie Fire Chief Chris Garrison tells 27 News the statue will be a firefighter holding Capt. Cory Barr's helmet. Capt. Barr was killed in the explosion July 10, 2018.

Garrison also says Angell Street between Bristol and Columbus will be renamed "Barr Street."

The memorial event will start around 5:30 p.m. and the city is working on plans to keep people safe. Masks will be required for anyone who attends the memorial, but Garrison says they are trying to keep the numbers to a minimum. The event will be streamed live on the Sun Prairie Fire Department's Facebook page.

Garrison says almost all of the funds for the statue were donated.
