Zach Braff and Donald Faison get to talk to some amazing guests on their podcast Fake Doctors, Real Friends. There’s all the times they get to chat with Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence, and their Scrubs co-stars John C. McGinley, Sarah Chalke, and Judy Reyes. But they’re so excited about their conversation with “living f**king legend” Richard Kind that they completely ignore their Scrubs episode recap just to hear all the incredible stories he has from his long and varied career. He talks about how he deliberately shaped his career, his audition for Spin City, why he loves auditioning, the time Michael J. Fox got him the biggest laugh of his life, and more.
Richard was performing with Second City, the legendary improv comedy theater in Chicago, when Michael J. Fox came to show one night. Celebrities were always invited to improv with them, so Richard was in the middle of a scene with Fox when suddenly, “Michael bounded – one, two, three – and jumped into my arms! And when I tell you – you’ve got to understand how long time is – there was a 45-second laugh. He was so athletic, and he just hung on, and I walked around with him….they were dying. It is a laugh I will always remember.” So when Richard was up for the part of “Paul Lassiter” in Spin City and he found out he had to meet with Michael first, he thought it would be no problem.
But Spin City co-creator Gary David Goldberg didn’t think Richard would be right for the part, so he wouldn’t let him audition. Finally, Bill Lawrence agreed to let him read, and Richard knew he nailed it. “Bill Lawrence is a f**king genius….I remember doing the scene and he wrote such a brilliant, funny line….and Michael J. Fox jumped in the air with laughter,” Richard says. “He laughed that hard at my delivery. And I have to admit I walked out of there going, ‘The part is mine.’” But that only scratches the surface; these guys have a fascinating and hilarious conversation about everything from theatre reviews and the horrors of the audition room to tee times and tennis serves. Hear it all on this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends.
