Gleb Savchenko has danced his way into America’s heart on Dancing With the Stars, spinning and twirling Jana Kramer, Nikki Glaser, Melanie C. and so many more throughout 9 seasons of the iconic competition show. But on this episode of How Men Think, he wants to give us a glimpse into his own heart. He shares some personal details (his ideal Saturday morning? “Sipping champagne on a boat in San Tropez. I’ve never done it, but it seems ideal”), answers listener questions about dating and relationships, and even brainstorms with a counselor various ways to get men interested in therapy.

Tamara talks about how difficult it is to date when you’re older; does it scare men off to tell them you’re looking for a life partner? Hannah wants to know how much she should talk about her exes on dates, especially when she’s asked about her past relationships. Another woman wonders when she should tell a new boyfriend that she has kids. With all of them, Gleb’s advice is pretty simple: Cut to the chase, be straightforward, don’t waste your time or theirs. If you’re looking for a life partner or if you have children, why hide it? If you conceal your past, important aspects of your life, or your priorities from everyone you date, you’re not being honest enough with anyone to actually find what you’re looking for.

When the counselor, Vanessa, calls in, she strays from the topic of romance to ask how she can help lift the stigma around men going to therapy. “The suicide rate for men is twice what it is for women,” she tells him. “How do we get to them before that point of desperation?” Gleb talks about how unsuccessful marriage counseling was for him and his ex-wife, Elena Samodanova, because he felt every session was about how to fix him, instead of how to fix the relationship. “I don’t want you to fix me, we need to fix us…so it was harder for me to open up,” he tells her. What he really wanted was an objective person who wanted the best for him and had the knowledge to look at his problems and tell him what to do about it. “You give tools to fix it,” he says. Maybe Vanessa will start a whole Therapy Toolbox TikTok account, who knows? Learn more about Gleb Savchenko and How Men Think on this podcast.
