Missing Beaver Dam teen found safe; suspect in custody

BEAVER DAM, Wis. (WKOW) — Authorities say missing 17-year-old Sophia Franklin has been found safe.

The suspect, Gary Day, is in custody. Day is the man police believed to be with Franklin while she was missing.

On Wednesday around 11:40 p.m., deputies with the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office notified the Beaver Dam Police Department of a tip about a possible sighting of Franklin and Day near Omaha, Nebraska.

Law enforcement made contact with Franklin and Day, and as a result Day was taken into custody. Franklin was taken to a secure facility to await re-unification with her family.

Franklin first went missing on Feb. 2, where she was last seen at her home. Day was last seen at Franklin's home on Feb. 3 just before 8 a.m.

At that time, she was 16. Her birthday was Wednesday. 

According to authorities, Franklin is 5 months pregnant, and Day is the man who impregnated her. There is a no contact order between the two.

The Beaver Dam Police Department is thanking the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office, as well as numerous other law enforcement agencies that put forth the time and effort to locate Franklin.

The department is also thanking the community members in multiple states for their awareness and willingness to share leads to follow to help bring Franklin home safely.

According to jail records, Day is booked on charges of contribute to delinquency of a child and false reporting misdemeanor in addition to three counts of fugitive from justice/prior to government warrant.
