Two boaters go missing after boat capsizes on Wisconsin River

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis (WKOW) -- Two boaters are missing after a boat capsized on the Wisconsin River, according to the Wisconsin Dells Police Department.

Chief Nicholas Brinker says that at approximately 4:24pm, there were reports that a boat had capsized on the Wisconsin River, south of the Kilbourn Dam.

Authorities say three individuals were in the boat at the time of the incident. One person was able to safely swim to shore.

That person was met by police and rescue units and evaluated and treated. The two other boaters were not seen after disappearing under the water, near where the boat capsized.

Multiple rescue boats were launched to begin searching for the two missing boaters. Additional assistance was requested by Columbia County and Sauk County Dive Teams.

Due to the high flow of water from the Kilbourn Dam and the fast-moving currents, divers were not able to dive and search for the missing boaters.

Boats with sonar capabilities, aerial drones, shoreline searches, and an underwater drone were deployed as well.

The search for the missing boaters is being suspended over the hours of darkness due to the unpredictable flow of the river, and the safety of the searchers. Search efforts will resume in the morning, with additional resources being requested to assist.

The names of the missing individuals are not being released at this time.
