Driver leads law enforcement on chase after trying to run over two people

DANE COUNTY, Wis. (WKOW) — Dashcam video shared with 27 News shows the moment a police chase on I-90 ended Tuesday morning.

Dane Couny Sheriff's Office spokesperson Elise Schaffer said deputies responded to the 500 block of Hillside Rd. in the Town of Albion around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. She said witnesses reported a man acting "erratically."

"He was just yelling. My understanding was he was kind of banging on his vehicle, just, you know, unusual behavior that made the people that were at this address very concerned. They didn't know the man, so they they called 911," Schaffer said.

Schaffer said the suspect then tried to hit two people with his car. Fearing for their safety, she said one of the men fired a gun into the air.

"And then the man got into his vehicle and left. A short time later, a DNR warden spotted the vehicle, attempted to pull him over. He did not pull over, and that's when a pursuit started, going north on I-90," she said.

Video of the pursuit was caught on Jared Thompson's dashcam. Thompson said at one point (in the video below) you see police trying to use stop sticks under the right side of the bridge.

"There was State Patrol that also joined in the pursuit. Deputies were also involved. Both deputies and State Patrol were attempting to lay road spikes at various locations in an attempt to deflate the tires on his vehicle so he would stop," Schaffer said.

The driver was stopped just north of the Beltline in the Town of Cottage Grove. Schaffer said she doesn't have an exact number, but witnesses reported counting roughly 20 law enforcement vehicles.

The driver was arrested and taken to the hospital. One of the witnesses in the Town of Albion was also taken to a hospital.

Schaffer said if you're on the road during a police chase, try and keep your distance as much as possible.

The suspect faces tentative charges of 1st Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety (2 counts) and Disorderly Conduct (2 counts). There could be additional charges.
