Cottage Grove man arrested in crash that killed a mother; injured son

COTTAGE GROVE, Wis. (WKOW) — The man who drove his car off the road and hit a mother, her son and their dog has been arrested for reckless homicide, the Cottage Grove Police Department announced during a news conference on Thursday.

The crash on the 1300 block of Landmark Drive Monday evening killed Dr. Kami Hansen, a chiropractor, and injured her son. Their dog died at the scene.

The family had been out for an evening walk at the time of the crash, which was reported at 6:36 p.m. 

Although family had previously identified Hansen, authorities officially identified her as the victim during the news conference. They said Hansen was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. 

Police identified the driver as Jeffrey M. Endres, 49, of Cottage Grove.

He was arrested and booked into Dane County Jail on Thursday. He faces charges of first-degree reckless homicide, first-degree reckless injury and first-degree endangering safety.

Police Chief Mark Garry said the event has deeply affected the community.

"This event has had a profound impact on not only the families directly affected but also on the neighborhood, the village of Cottage Grove, and the wider Dane County community," he said.

Police announced Hansen's son, who was also taken to the hospital on Monday, was treated and has been released.

Garry said the investigation remains active, and the Dane County District Attorney's office is assisting the Cottage Grove Police Department.
