Suspect accused of hitting Cottage Grove family dies in jail

MADISON (WKOW) -- The man accused of hitting his neighbors with his car in Cottage Grove, killing one of them, died in the Dane County Jail, according to a law enforcement source.

Deputies found Jeffrey Endres unresponsive in his cell the morning of May 6, less than 24 hours after his initial court appearance. They, along with jail medical staff and paramedics, tried to save him, but he was pronounced dead.

Endres, 49, had been charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of Dr. Kami Hansen, 41. Cottage Grove police said Hansen died after being hit by a car on April 28 when she was on an evening walk on her street with her husband and one of her sons.

Endres was also charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide against Hansen's husband and son. He was charged with mistreatment of an animal causing death for the death of the Hansens' dog in the crash.

Prosecutors said in a criminal complaint that he hit the family with his car hours after reading a police report about an alleged crime Hansen's son committed against his child. This son was the same one hit in the crash. Endres admitted to being the driver of the car and told police he was having suicidal thoughts.

Records show the Hansen family and Endres family are neighbors. Court documents said the families were close until the alleged crime happened in March. Police found videos on Hansen's son's phone that "victimized Endres' child."

Endres was being held in the Dane County Jail on a $1 million bond at the time of his death. He is no longer listed on the inmate roster.
