Victim of Middleton poison attack speaks out in court

MADISON (WKOW) -- One of the victims who was targeted in an elaborate plot to poison women spoke out in Dane County Circuit Court Friday.

The victim, who was not shown on camera or given an identity, spoke publicly over Zoom during the hearings of Paul VanDuyne Jr. and Andrea Whitaker.

The only identification given was that she was the woman involved in the attacks that happened in Dane County.

VanDuyne and Whitaker are charged in both Dane and Rock counties for trying to kill two women with poisons

The two women were people VanDuyne had dated in the past.

"Him and I were not in a relationship," the victim said. "I did not wrong him in any way. The truth is I barely knew him, and yet, he and his accomplice decided that I should die."

According to the criminal complaint, the Dane County victim says she and VanDuyne had dated briefly over a year ago.

Prosecutors say VanDuyne had been caught breaking into her car at the Middleton Costco parking lot twice.

She and her current boyfriend drank a substance that was placed in her water bottle. Authorities say the substance contained cyanide and thallium. They say VanDuyne put it there.

In the victim's statement, she also mentioned that Whitaker entered into her garage in late April and did not know her identity, nor relation to VanDuyne.

The woman said she has been having trouble managing the trauma.

"Since that day, I no longer feel safe. Not in my own home, not out in the community. I am scared for myself. I am scared for my two children. I cannot sleep soundly," she said.

Prior to the incident, VanDuyne's lawyer said that he did not have a criminal record.

The judge set VanDuyne's bail at $10 million and Whitaker's at $4 million Friday.
