Death during 4th of July celebration under investigation in Richland County

CAZENOVIA, Wis. (WKOW) — Tragedy struck during a Fourth of July celebration on Friday night when a young man from Reedsburg fell from a truck and died, according to the Richland County Sheriff's Office.

The man was identified as Ethan Peper, 22.

The circumstances surrounding Peper's death are still being investigated. Authorities said it happened around 11:25 p.m. on Dix Lane in the village of Cazenovia.

Emergency services, including Cazenovia EMS, Fire, and UW Medflight, responded quickly but were unable to save Peper. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses initially present were hesitant to speak with law enforcement. The sheriff’s office believes more people may have crucial details about the incident.

From the limited information gathered, witnesses said Peper was seated on a tailgate of a truck when he fell onto the roadway.

The investigation remains ongoing, and charges are pending.
