Hidden cameras found in Verona Airbnb; owner charged

VERONA, Wis. — Madison police are investigating hidden cameras found in a Verona Airbnb. Detectives say these cameras were discovered by a renter in the bathrooms, pointing toward toilets and shower areas.

Police arrested the home's owner, Patrick Sias. He faces charges of invasion of privacy and has been released on a signature bond.

The criminal complaint against Sias states that detectives believe the cameras were intended to record images of renters' private areas.

"The investigation is still active," said Madison police spokesperson Stephanie Fryer.

Fryer added that detectives are following all legal steps to review the collected evidence.

"This is being investigated by our sensitive crimes unit because people of all ages were staying at this property," said Fryer.

Camp Randall recently hosted two massive concerts, drawing thousands to the area.

"People from Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota or anywhere in the United States or across the world could have had ties to that address," said Fryer.

Detectives urge anyone who stayed at the home to contact Madison police as they determine how long the cameras were recording and who may have been caught on tape.

Fryer advised that if you're staying in a rental like an Airbnb, it's important to conduct a quick safety check.

"Look closely at outlets, vents, photo frames—even alarm clocks and remote controls. Also, check what devices are connected to the home's Wi-Fi. If something feels off, call local police. They'd rather check it out than have your privacy violated," said Fryer.
